Q. Where do you get fresh water from for the school?
A. Water comes from two water tanks that collects water from the church roof.
Q. Do you have access to power such as gas, electricity, generators?
A. Electricity is limited to the office and church only.
Q. Would you benefit from having electricity in the classroom?
A. While fans in the classrooms would be great on very hot days, electricity is extremely expensive in the Solomon Islands (many times the cost in Australia). The ongoing cost of paying for electricity would be a problem.
Q. How long do the students spend at school per day?
A. It varies. Arrival time is 7.45am with lessons starting at 8am. For the Early Childhood Education (ECE) students, the day ends at 11.30am. The Preparatory class goes home at 12.30pm. Grades 1 to 3 go home at 1pm. Grades 4 to 6 go home at 1.30pm. Every student gets a half hour break with ECE at 10am and the Primary students at 10.30am.
Q. Does the school have access to flushing toilets?
A. The school has flushable toilets but they are not connected to the water supply. Bucket flush is required. There aren’t any wash basins connected to allow students to wash hands after the toilet.
Q. Could you benefit from renewable sources of energy such as solar panels?
A. Solar panels are used in some parts of the Solomon Islands. They are a good source of power and there are local companies that do installations. Keeping them secure and safe from theft is a consideration.
