Developing World Day

Let’s hear from our first school in the Northern Territory, Good Shepherd Lutheran College in Darwin….

The Year 4 students have lead our unit of inquiry and have decided that they want to send ‘shoe boxes of love’ to underprivileged children.

We’ve learnt a lot so far about the developing world and how there are so many children less fortunate than us. As a part of our learning, we had ‘Developing World – Day’ where we experienced what it would be like for a child living in poverty. This consist​ed of students walking for 30 minutes to get to school, 1 piece of fruit for recess and a bowl of rice for lunch, 1 piece of paper and a pencil, and no aircon/lights/fans for the day. A wonderful experience for the kids, and a great opportunity for them to understand who they can help and how.

The students have decided that they are going to present their learning and their SEATs at the exhibition night for parents and teachers to attend. They will auction off their SEATs to raise money for their ‘Shoe Boxes’. Linked in with our Money unit students have been researching cost of items to purchase for their shoe boxes, and how much they will need to raise from their SEATs in order to purchase the items required. Students have now started designing what they would like to paint on their SEATs with a central theme/message.

Things are progressing well and the kids are really engaged in the whole process.”
